Our story: How we met

John and I will be celebrating our third wedding anniversary on Wednesday, so I thought it might be fun to share a little bit more about how we met, our engagement, and our wedding day!

John and I met in 2008 when we were both juniors in college.
John was going to school at Florida State, and I was up north attending Michigan State.

It all started during Christmas break when John was visiting some friends from high school (who also attended Michigan State).  We were celebrating New Year's Eve in East Lansing, and it just so happened that one of the friends that John was visiting was my then-boyfriend.

I'm not going to lie, even though at the time I was dating one of my now-husband's friends, as soon as I saw John, I knew that I was going to marry him.

I was so sure, in fact, that I called a few of my friends to let them know.  They were obviously confused and didn't understand what I was talking about... but I didn't really care - I had just met my husband! That's exciting people!

The next step was breaking the news to him...

I mean really, I was fully prepared to say "Hi, I'm Lisa - and we are going to get married.  I know I'm dating your friend, but it's really great to meet you."

Now, from this point forward, the story that John tells is a bit different than how I remember it (and let me assure you, my version - the one written below - is the correct one).

After consulting my friends, they advised me that the best method would not be to tell him that I was planning to marry him, and instead, I should probably just start with "hello."  I decided I would do something in between the two.  I approached my husband and said "I have a really strong connection with you."

Girls, this really happened - looking back, I'm sure I looked like a freak.

Anyway, much to my surprise, my husband responded with "me too." (He says this never happened... psht - he knows it did, he is just trying to be diplomatic since I was dating his friend).

This was basically the extent of our conversation, and I didn't see or talk to him again until a few months later when he was heading back to Michigan for the summer.  And no, I was no longer dating his friend.

We started hanging out regularly, and our relationship developed pretty normally from that point forward despite the super strange start.  And the rest, as they say, is history!

And just in case you're wondering (and because everyone asks me) ...no, the boyfriend was not invited to our wedding!

Engagement story tomorrow!

  4. Haha love this story! My husband pretty much had a girlfriend when we met, too. He broke up with her and now she's dating one of his best friends - who was in our wedding party! She didn't come to the wedding though which was fine by me because the whole situation is a little awkward still!

  24. Bahaha the whole time I'm thinking, "I wonder if the boyfriend was the best man in the wedding being your husbands friend and all". This is too cute! I love that you knew immediately. I swear, when ya know, ya know. No one can get that until it actually happens to them. Congrats on three years :)

  25. bahaha that is too funny. My husband remembers me telling him I loved him the first time we met because he played football, and I love me some football. I didn't remember this at all until he brought it up at some point in time later on, probably years later. I think maybe we are all just a little strange at the start!
